Coronavirus: Here’s how germs are spread and where you’re most likely to catch them

As lockdowns start to be lifted, Professor of Biology Erin Bromage explains how infectious diseases spread. He asses the risk of catching coronavirus in a variety of settings, including at events like weddings and birthday parties. The risk of catching diseases outdoors is relatively low, he concludes. He notes that most people get infected in their own home. A household member contracts the virus in the community and brings it into the house where sustained contact between household members leads to infection. But where are people contracting infection in the community? Bromage states that some of the biggest super-spreading events are in meat packing plants, weddings, funerals, and birthdays, restaurants, indoor sports, workplaces, and business networking events.
